Albrecht Dürer è indiscutibilmente uno dei più grandi artisti del Rinascimento nordico, ammirato per la sua abilità perfino dall'italocentrico Giorgio Vasari. Una mostra a Londra ora esplora le origini dell'arte di Dürer e rivela come il tedesco, nato a Norimberga nel 1471, fosse fin da una giovanissima età conscio dei suoi talenti e deciso a sfruttarli e perfezionarli. "Il giovane Dürer", alla Courtauld Gallery, mostra il precoce talento di Dürer che, dopo l'apprendistato da orafo come il padre, decise di cambiare strada e studiare disegno e pittura. Ambizioso ma pragmatico, deciso a farsi conoscere ma anche a imparare il più possible, viaggiò poi per anni sia in Germania che in Italia - Wanderjahre per conoscere altri pittori e perfezionare la sua tecnica. The baby reaches for his mother's hand and their eyes meet. While the Madonna still owes much to the Late Gothic German type, the Christ Child is reminiscent of Italian models. Half length figures such as this early picture of the Madonna were widespread in Italy and the Netherlands. The depiction of the space with the view to the side through an arch is reminiscent of Flemish models, but the figural conception and monumental triangular composition of the group of figures also relates to Italy, in particular to the Madonna paintings by Giovanni Bellini.
